Italy Grand Driving Tour – Alfa Romeo
Italy through the eyes of its great motoring legends
About This Tour
From Alfa Romeo in Milan to Riva Boats on Lake Iseo and Ferrari in Modena, before taking the wheel ourselves in Tuscany. A journey into Italian motoring culture with privileged access, remarkable collections and four unforgettable days with our classic Alfa Romeos.
Our journey begins at Milan Malpensa, followed by a transfer into the city and the Hotel Indigo. That afternoon, a private guided walk introduces us to central Milan before we return to the hotel for welcome drinks. Dinner is a short stroll away at Il Salumaio di Montenapoleone, an appropriately stylish setting in which to begin a week devoted to Italian design, cars and culture.
After breakfast, we leave Milan for Arese and the Alfa Romeo Museum, where a guided visit takes us through more than a century of racing, engineering and unmistakably Italian design. Then comes something altogether more unusual: a private visit to the Alfa Blue Team, an exceptional collection normally beyond the reach of the casual visitor. We stay for lunch before continuing east towards Franciacorta. Here, Italian craftsmanship takes a different form. At Bellini Nautica we visit the Riva Vintage Collection, a wonderful gathering of the classic boats that turned Riva into an international symbol of la dolce vita. Our day ends in Franciacorta with dinner at the hotel.
Today we travel south to Modena and the Casa Enzo Ferrari, exploring the life of Enzo Ferrari and the extraordinary automotive culture that grew around this part of Emilia-Romagna. After checking into our hotel, the afternoon is free, with an optional opportunity to continue the Ferrari theme. Drinks at the hotel bring everyone together again before we head out for dinner in Modena.
Leaving Modena behind, we travel south into Tuscany and arrive at Villa Curina around midday. This afternoon the character of the journey changes: our fleet of classic Alfa Romeos is waiting. Following the car presentation and tour briefing, choose your classic and head out for the first drive through the Tuscan countryside. We return to Villa Curina in the late afternoon, with the evening left entirely free.
Choose your Alfa Romeo after breakfast and set off into southern Tuscany towards Pienza. There is time for lunch before a guided visit introduces us to this beautifully proportioned Renaissance town. The afternoon brings some of the finest driving of the week as we cross the Crete Senesi, a landscape of rolling clay hills, cypress trees and wonderfully quiet roads. Back at the hotel there is time to relax before we transfer to Villa a Sesta for dinner at Osteria alla Villa.
Today the classics take us west to Volterra, dramatically positioned above the surrounding countryside and with a history stretching back to the Etruscans. Enjoy lunch at leisure before joining our guided visit through the historic centre. The afternoon drive brings us back through Tuscany to Villa Curina. That evening we leave the cars behind and transfer to Pensieri di Cavatina for our final dinner together.
There is time for one final morning behind the wheel. We choose our Alfa Romeos and head for Siena, where a guided walk takes us into one of Italy’s great medieval cities before lunch at leisure. Our last drive continues towards Monteriggioni and Casone, where it is time to return the classics. From here, a transfer takes us to Florence Airport (FLR), bringing our Italian Grand Tour to a close.
Italy
taly has always approached the motor car differently. Engineering matters, but so do proportion, sound, character and emotion. The same instinct that shaped the country’s architecture, fashion and furniture can be found in its greatest cars – and even in the impossibly elegant wooden speedboats that came to define summers on the Italian lakes. Our Grand Tour follows this creative thread from Milan through Franciacorta and Modena before arriving in Tuscany, where the classics finally become ours to drive.
Arese is the natural place to begin, with the Alfa Romeo Museum telling the story of a marque inseparable from Italian sporting history. From there, however, we go somewhere rather less accessible. The Alfa Blue Team is a remarkable private collection and the sort of place that cannot simply be added to a conventional itinerary; access comes through personal connections. In Franciacorta, another privileged visit awaits at Bellini Nautica and its Riva Vintage Collection, celebrating boats whose mahogany hulls and exquisite detailing have become icons of Italian design. Modena then takes us into the heart of Motor Valley and the world of Enzo Ferrari.
Tuscany changes the pace completely. Here we leave museums and collections behind and take the wheel of our own classic Alfa Romeos. Chianti, the Crete Senesi and the roads to Pienza, Volterra and Siena provide the setting: landscapes that have barely changed in centuries and roads on which these cars feel entirely at home. Add wonderful food, intimate restaurants and evenings among the Tuscan hills, and the second half of the journey becomes a celebration not just of Italian motoring, but of the Italian way of life.
